Was due 3/29 - Act 1 Annotations and Writing (20 points)
Due 3/30 by the end of class - 2 CD Analysis Paragraph (4 points)
Learning Target: I can use my knowledge of structured writing to analyze thematic topics or characterization.
Task #1 - A leap to the party - Take out a sheet of paper and as you watch, take notes on the following:
- How would a director block this scene? (organize the actors on stage)
- Is Romeo aware that Tybalt has figured out who he is?
- What is Capulet’s response to Romeo being at the party?
- What the heck are Romeo and Juliet talking about? Pilgrims? Prayers? Holy palmers’ kiss? Purging of sin?
- What might Juliet mean when she so passionately utters, “You kiss by th’ book” (1.5.110). And bonus question, what is wrong with my embedding of the quote?
- Possible interpretations:
- You kiss like you’ve studied how.
- You kiss according to the rules.
- You don’t kiss with a lot of passion, but very technical.
- You kiss like you’ve studied how.
- Possible interpretations:
Task #2 Thematic topic/Characterization Analysis
- You have the remainder of class to write a 2 chunk analysis. You will turn this in at the end of class with your notes from Task #1
- After watching two different versions of Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet, you must now demonstrate your knowledge by comparing the two films. You may either write about theme or about characterization.
Option 1: Compare how the two directors highlight a major thematic topic from Act 1.
Option 2: Choose one of the major characters from Act 1 and compare the way in which the two directors/actors are portrayed.
- This is a 2 chunk paragraph. You do not need to embed quotes for your CDs. You should paraphrase and/or include facts from the movie to help prove your TS. The focus of your CM, as per usual, is your insightful opinion about how your CD explains/proves your TS. You shouldn’t just “translate” the CD in your own words. CM is the following: the “so what?”; the “why?”; Analysis; Interpretation; Evaluation; Inference; Insight.
