Learning Target - I will learn how to analyze literary techniques and language in order to identify theme...and enjoy a unique - but not uncommon - song structure.
Task #1 - Music Monday - Today’s first summer Music Monday experience is aimed at introducing you to the idea that looking at the structure of a story, along with using prior knowledge and language analysis, impacts your understanding and appreciation of the source.
Andrew Bird’s “Left Hand Kisses” uses a unique, but not uncommon, narrative structure. Most songs use 1 narrator that is either singing praise or contempt to or for a specific individual (love songs), simply explaining events (story songs) or expressing feelings or opinions on a topic/issue (dance songs, folk songs). Rarely does a song allow for two people to actually “talk” to one another.
There are a few notable exceptions: I Got You, Babe, Home, You’re The One That I Want, Well Its True That We Love One Another.
As you watch the video, pay close attention to the indirect and direct characterization. How do the characters think and feel about one another, about their relationship, about love?
Read the lyrics to practice using your prior knowledge and language analysis skills to analyze the meaning of each line.
