It is official! We are now actually moving forward with new content and skills.
This week you will be finishing up our American Voices unit early with a personal response that reflects on what you experienced in the last several weeks. What did you learn about yourself, your family, your country?
Essential Question for the Week: What did you learn about American identity during the last month? What characteristics did citizens show that connected, contradicted or reinforced what we learned before schools closed?
Task #1 - Reading Skills: Students will actively read Rules of the Game from your Pearson Realize online textbook (Go to Unit #1, click on Small Group Learning) and identify key elements of characterization. Students will type up their work on their Reading 2 document and post 2 CDs and the terms they connect to from the list below (no embedding) to the weekly Speaking & Listening Discussion on Schoology.
You will need to look closely at the new characterization terms you need to add to your prior knowledge.
Tips and vocabulary for identifying characterization: the way in which an author presents the thoughts and feelings of the characters.
- Direct presentation: a character’s thoughts and feelings are described by the author, the narrator or the other characters.
- Indirect presentation: a character's thoughts and feelings are revealed by their actions and speech.
- Flat characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work.
- Round characters are complex and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader.
- Static characters do not change over the course of the story
- Dynamic characters undergo some great transformation from the conflict that s/he must overcome.
- External conflict is a problem outside of the protagonist's control.
- Internal conflict is a problem that exists within the characters themselves.
Task #2 - Writing Skill: In your Writing 2 document, write a 2 Chunk response that analyzes the growth of a character over the course of Rules of the Game using several of the terms from your Reading task for the week.
Post your work to the Schooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooology Discussion for the week.
Tips for Writing a 2 Chunk Response
- Focus on refining your CD usage. Make sure your CD is smoothly embedded or has enhancing & informational context, edited down, properly cited and would seem important or meaningful to someone who had never read the source material.
- CDs should obviously give some insight into how a character thinks or feels.
- Practice writing bits of CM that consistently shows nuanced, sophisticated understanding of the character.
Task #3 - Language Skills: On your Language 2 document, identify 5 words from Rules of the Game that seem important, sophisticated or you had to look up and write an original sentence using each one. and post your best sentence to the Schoooooooooooooooooooooooooooology Discussion for the week.
Tips for increasing your Language Skills
- Identify words that you do not know in a text.
- Look up and write down the definitions of words you do not know.
- Look up examples of that word in other sentences. There are several online tools for this...like Words in a Sentence.com.
- Write a sentence using the word that actually provides context for the word.
- You can practice vocabulary at this link too: vocabtest.com.
Task #4 - Grammar & Conventions Skills: Students will review the mini lessons on comma usage and the comma cheat sheet then write 5 sentences using commas.
You will be given a quiz through Schooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooology that you will need to complete by Friday.
Task #5 - Speaking & Listening: Students will write a personal narrative on the Speaking & Listening 2 document that answers this week's essential question. Post your work to the class discussion on Schooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooology.
